Define Normal, define de Tapol…ok here we go: both French musicians started a residency early June at Ateliers Claus. After a five day collaboration they'll be able to present the result of their musical hunt. Julie Normal plays a rare instrument called the Ondes Martenot: one of the earliest electronic instruments made in France. It's eerie, wavering notes are produced by varying the frequency of oscillation in vacuum tubes. Aymeric de Tapol is the street dog of the Brussels musical output. Playing in different formations and varied style, there's no need to put a label on this puppy. With Julie he grinds his teeth on a modular synthesizer, effects and other electronic machinery to sculpt his musical wall.
Martiens, Go Home! took their name from an old science-fiction novel. Since its inception in 1996, Brussels collective martiensgohome has collected, treated and played various forms of field recordings. Noise, machine failure, contact-mike recordings, radio statics and larger scale field recordings -- every available sound is examined, tried out, deformed or kept intact, and assembled to take part in our improvised counterfeit soundscapes. It is a fantasy, a truth lying somewhere between a lie and fiction.
