◢ XIU XIU + EUGENE S.ROBINSON (OXBOW): SAL MINEO (us)
A new collaborative project by Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu) and Eugene S. Robinson (Oxbow) which will see its debut album release in April 2013 on Important Records. Both create tense, narrative-driven atmospheres charged with an undercurrent of latent aggression built up from the repeated accretion of failure, via samples of familiar sounds, free roaming experimentation and arresting lyrics that conjure troubled characters from daily life.
Eugene S. Robinson puts the work in. From past collaborative efforts with Lydia Lunch, Marianne Faithfull, Gus Van Sant, Steve Albini, DJ Rupture, Bill Cosby, Kathy Acker, Allen Ginsberg, Jarboe, Old Man Gloom, and a passel of side projects passing from electronica to post-punk, Robinson's work with his primary group OXBOW covers two decades of chaotic complexity, 8 some-odd releases, a few sound tracks and even a few books.
Jamie Stewart over the course of 8 records, and even more compilations, collaborations [Michael Gira, Devendra Banhart, Deerhoof, Carla Bozulich, Larsen, Shearwater], splits, singles, live albums, and an endless touring schedule that covers the globe and then again, has embraced the art as everything ideal with a stevedore's dedication to the work harder, longer, better, faster than many others/any others ethos. And Stewart’s multi-instrumentalism and obsession with structural chaos and clarity seals whatever deal needs sealing.
◢ JE SUIS LE PETIT CHEVALIER (be)
Je Suis le Petit Chevalier (shelter press, aguirre, sic sic tapes, la station radar...) is the nom-de-plume of french based in Belgium songstress and viusal artist Felicia Atkinson . While she's done a number of releases under her own name, JSLPC came into being early in 2011 and has been haunting stereos ever since. She toured all over Europe since and opened for Grouper, High Wolf, White/Light, Ensemble Ecomomique, in various places such as La Casa Encendida in Madrid, Palais de Tokyo in Paris, or OCCI in Amsterdam. "An Age of Wonder" (Shelter Press/ La Station radar) is her last LP released yet. Simple keyboard loops float in the air around a series of minimal beats. Atkinson's vocals emerge from the mist like a beacon leading you somewhere unknown. There's a sadness in the repeating chords that pulls out fragile emotions from the deep end of the ocean.
Her new album DARK MORSE is out now as a special cassette on Shelter Press, while a number of collabs/ splits will be out during the following year : with Ensemble Economique on Peak Oil, with Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Birds of Passage and Aloona on Watery Starve and with Ela Orleans on Clandestine. Felicia also co-runs the Shelter Press label and imprint.
◢ UNHAPPYBIRTHDAY (de)
Sometimes washed out like a rainy day or sticky like chewing gum, but always with a pretty melancholic root to howl – that is how the music of unhappybirthday sounds like. Somewhere between Grauzone, Fehlfarben, DAF or early The Cure, this band from North Germany has built a whole cosmos.
