Welcome to the try-out of Transkamer

distance as a virtue

the idea dies in a song
an alienated autobiography

Janáček String Quartet No.1 'Kreutzer Sonata' Separated, an installation by Felix Kindermann
The work "Janáček String Quartet No.1 'Kreutzer Sonata' Separated" shows the four musicians of the Zerkalo Quartet. But instead of playing together, the four musicians are recorded isolated and completely separated from each other. Re-merged on four individual monitors in one installation, we hear and see each individual playing her/his part of the score. What is left, is the imagination of one another.
In 1887-89 Tolstoy writes his novel "Kreutzer Sonata", in which he describes a man who kills his wife out of jealousy. His imagination she could have a romance to a violinist she is performing Beethoven's "Kreutzer Sonata" (1802) with, became so strong that he finally murders her.
While Tolstoy seems to reject the concept of free love expressed by Beethoven's "Kreutzer Sonata", the Czech composer Leoš Janáček composed his version of the "Kreutzer Sonata" in 1923 as frank and passionated as love itself. Although based on Tolstoy's novel he instead shows empathy for the woman when he says"I was imagining a poor woman, tormented and run down, just like the one the Russian writer Tolstoy describes in his Kreutzer Sonata"
To stress his attempt, Janáček is using a principle of thematic montage including his characteristic modal inflections. The quartet almost abandons the fields of traditional harmony and instead makes free with the varied sonic factors. "Janáček String Quartet No.1 'Kreutzer Sonata' Separated" is following his attempt of composition and puts into question how a term like harmony can be approached in today.
